Alfa Romeo Junior - Review

Alfa Romeo has entered the electric era with the Junior, its debut compact electric and hybrid SUV. Designed to compete with models like the Hyundai Kona, Peugeot E-2008, and Jeep Avenger, the Junior brings its own unique flavour to the segment. From its striking design that stands out in a crowded market to a sporty variant that promises an exhilarating drive, there’s plenty to get excited about. But does it have what it takes to truly lead the pack? Watch our review from Nevo’s EV expert Derek Reilly and read on to find out.

Performance

Alfa Romeo’s engineers have put significant effort into ensuring the Junior delivers the driving excitement the brand is known for. Even entry-level models feature notable chassis tweaks for enhanced agility. However, the Veloce trim takes performance to the next level, with nearly every component upgraded—springs, dampers, steering, brakes—and 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires for optimal grip and efficiency.

With 278bhp and a 0-100km/h time of just 5.9 seconds, the Veloce prioritises performance without compromising the signature Alfa Romeo driving feel. Its suspension has been thoroughly overhauled, incorporating a mechanical differential and a 25mm lower ride height for sharper handling. Hydraulic bump stops ensure the setup remains composed and comfortable, avoiding the harshness often found in sporty configurations.

Handling is another highlight of the Veloce. The steering is well-weighted and provides excellent feedback, making it highly engaging through corners. A unique feature of the Dynamic driving mode is the complete deactivation of brake regeneration, allowing for a traditional braking experience that feels consistent and intuitive. Overall, the Veloce delivers an engaging and enjoyable drive that sets it apart in its class.

Range and Charging

The Alfa Junior shares its foundation with the Jeep Avenger, utilising the same updated e-CMP platform and a 51kWh usable lithium-ion NMC battery (54kWh total capacity). This setup provides a WLTP range of up to 410 km for the lower-powered Elettrica and Speciale variants. The performance-focused Veloce, however, trades some of that range for added power, offering 333 km. Alfa has also included a standard heat pump to enhance efficiency and incorporated aerodynamic design to optimize performance.

Charging capabilities for the Junior are competitive, with a maximum speed of 100kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in approximately 35-40 minutes. Using a 7kW home charger, a full recharge can be achieved in about nine hours. The CCS and Type 2 connectors are conveniently positioned where a traditional fuel filler would be, and these European-standard ports ensure compatibility with the majority of public chargers across Ireland and Western Europe.

Design and Interior

The Alfa Junior is well-proportioned for its segment, with a bold front end featuring the signature Alfa shield in a cut-out design and a distinct groove along the edge of the bonnet—possibly a nod to the iconic 1963 GT Junior’s step-nose. At the back, the ski-jump tail design isn’t just stylish but also aids aerodynamics, while the pronounced peak over the rear wheels adds a contemporary EV touch. The rear design is said to draw inspiration from the Giulia TZ.

Inside, the cabin features charcoal-coloured upholstery with part-Alcantara trim, enhanced by striking red contrast stitching that adds a pop of character. A standout detail is the slim-rimmed Alcantara steering wheel, which feels exceptionally tactile and contributes significantly to the driving pleasure in the Junior Veloce. The interior centres around a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen angled towards the driver. It provides intuitive control over most functions and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard, letting you bypass Alfa’s software if you prefer using your smartphone’s interface.

Practicality hasn’t been overlooked, with a 400-litre boot that’s spacious for this class of car. A variable-height boot floor makes cable storage easier, and there’s even a small frunk for an additional cable—provided you can coil it neatly enough to fit.

Cost Considerations

The complete pricing details for the Alfa Romeo Junior in Ireland are still under wraps, but we do know the special launch edition will start at €34,995. The entry-level Elettrica trim offers a solid package, including 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, customisable ambient lighting, and a standard efficiency-boosting heat pump.

Step up to the mid-tier Junior Speciale, which I had the chance to test drive, and you’ll enjoy additional features like an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with a massage function, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a reversing camera, and a powered tailgate for added convenience.

At the top of the lineup sits the Junior Veloce, where performance meets style. It boasts part-suede Sabelt Corsa racing seats and exclusive design touches, along with major upgrades to power and suspension for an enhanced driving experience.

Conclusion

The Alfa Romeo Junior did a good job of bringing the brand’s unique flair into the electric SUV market. Offering a nice blend of performance, design, practicality, and a generous host of features that come as standard. While the full pricing details are yet to be revealed, the Junior is shaping up to be a compelling option for those seeking a compact electric SUV with a sporty edge.
