Volvo ES90 - First Look

Volvo has just revealed the ES90, an all-electric luxury saloon that will sit alongside the EX90 SUV at the top of the brand’s lineup. Designed as the electric successor to the S90, this sleek new model represents Volvo’s latest step towards an all-electric future. We got an exclusive first glimpse at its launch in Sweden and will be taking it for a full test drive later this year.

Range and charging

The ES90 is Volvo’s most advanced vehicle to date, built on the SPA2 platform and featuring cutting-edge 800-volt electrical architecture. This enables ultra-fast charging, with the ability to gain up to 300km of range in just 10 minutes when plugged into a 350kW DC fast charger.

The model will launch with two battery options, offering a WLTP range of up to 700km on a single charge. Even with the smaller pack, drivers can still expect an impressive 650km range, making the ES90 one of the most capable long-distance EVs in its class. A 10-80% charge takes approximately 20 minutes, ensuring minimal downtime on the road.

Exterior

At five metres long, the ES90 is slightly longer than the outgoing S90, but its biggest change comes in height—standing 105mm taller. This adjustment accommodates its larger 88kWh and 102kWh battery packs, improving interior space and comfort.

Visually, the ES90 stays true to Volvo’s design DNA while introducing fresh elements. The signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights extend down into the lower bumper, giving the front end a modern and distinctive look. Volvo’s ‘Iron Mark’ badge sits centrally, while a sleek bonnet design adds to its powerful stance.

On the side, the ES90 moves away from the traditional saloon silhouette, opting instead for a sleek fastback-inspired roofline. This enhances aerodynamics and contributes to the car’s premium presence. As seen on the EX90, a roof-mounted LiDAR scanner sits above the windscreen, hinting at Volvo’s long-term plans for autonomous driving.

At the rear, a redesigned light signature builds on Volvo’s classic C-shaped taillight design, now featuring an additional vertically stacked light cluster for a more futuristic look. A 424-litre boot provides generous storage, while foldable rear seats allow for extra cargo capacity. Up front, a 22-litre ‘frunk’ offers space for smaller essentials like charging cables.

Interior

Inside, the ES90 embraces Volvo’s signature minimalist approach with a clean, premium cabin layout. A 9-inch digital instrument cluster sits behind the steering wheel, which features haptic touch controls for easy access to key functions. A colour head-up display provides turn-by-turn navigation and essential driving information.

The centrepiece of the interior is a 14.5-inch Google-powered infotainment system, which seamlessly integrates Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play services. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included, making smartphone connectivity effortless.

Volvo has gone to great lengths to enhance cabin quietness, ensuring a refined driving experience. For audiophiles, a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system with Dolby Atmos spatial audio is available, delivering an immersive listening experience.

Sustainability remains a core focus, with materials throughout the cabin reflecting Volvo’s environmental commitments. The ‘Nordico’ upholstery is crafted from recycled PET bottles, while responsibly sourced FSC-certified wood trim adds a natural, elegant touch.

Cost Considerations

Volvo has yet to announce official pricing for the ES90 in Ireland, but the model is expected to arrive later this year. Detailed pricing and specifications will be confirmed closer to launch.

Conclusion

With cutting-edge technology, ultra-fast charging, and a luxurious yet sustainable interior, the Volvo ES90 is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the premium EV market. We’ll have a full road test coming soon, so stay tuned for more insights on Volvo’s latest electric flagship.
