Video Review
Few electric vehicles capture EV enthusiasts' attention like the Tesla Model 3, and even fewer excite them as much as the Tesla Model 3 Performance. Now featuring adaptive dampers, a stiffer chassis, and a new rear electric motor, along with several upgrades introduced across the entire range late last year, the latest Model 3 Performance is a more refined and enjoyable electric performance car.
Performance
The real test is in the driving experience, and the new Performance model gets many things right straight away. While there isn’t a specific torque figure available, the key acceleration stat sits just above three-second mark, hitting 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 262km/h. The new high-performance sports seats are outstanding and, in any other car, would be noteworthy. Compared to the typical seats in Tesla's, these are a significant improvement.
The new Performance model makes effective use of its power, thanks in part to the new 'Track mode.' This feature allows drivers to finely tune various powertrain parameters, significantly affecting how the car delivers its performance. You can adjust the power split between the front and rear axles, choose from three levels of stability control, and even set the level of regenerative braking—an unprecedented feature in any Tesla.
One of the standout improvements in the new Performance model is the suspension, which is the best we've experienced in any Model 3, or indeed any Tesla. It isn’t soft, but it is well-controlled and smooth, handling road bumps far better than any previous Model 3. The Performance model embraces body movement, maintaining stability through corners and providing a seamless driving experience.
Range and Charging
The Performance version is the pinnacle of the Tesla Model 3 lineup. Its battery delivers a range of up to 528km in official tests, surpassing most other fast EVs. While achieving over 500km is quite feasible in regular driving conditions, tapping into the car’s powerful performance can reduce that range more quickly.
A major advantage of owning a Tesla is the easy access to the Supercharger network. The Model 3 can charge at speeds up to 250 kW, which Tesla says can add over 228km of range in just 15 minutes.
Design and Interior
While the updated Model 3 maintains its restrained aesthetic, numerous new details give it a more serious stance. The front bumper differs significantly from the standard Model 3, featuring a prominent splitter and large vertical air intakes that create a lower and wider appearance. The body also sits closer to the ground, riding on impressive forged 20-inch wheels with high-performance Michelin tires.
The rear design echoes this focus on performance. Despite the unimpressive badge, the carbon fibre rear lip spoiler and new lower bumper clip reinforce Tesla's dedication to crafting a high-performance super saloon.
Some of the features you’ll find in the interior are ambient interior lighting, three-zone climate control, leather-look synthetic upholstery, heated and ventilated front sports seats (with 12-way adjustment and the new performance logo at the bottom of the headrest), virtual gear selector (via the primary touchscreen), a new multifunction, heated steering wheel and a powered boot lid.
The Model 3 also includes the same 15.4-inch central touchscreen found in other variants, serving as the nerve centre for the car and integrating the gear selector after Tesla removed the column-mounted gear and indicator stalks. Turn indicators are now part of the steering wheel, similar to Ferrari. For rear passengers, an additional 8.0-inch display provides access to climate controls and entertainment on the go.
Cost Considerations
Tesla Model 3 prices start at around €40,990 for the rear-wheel drive model, €48,990 for the Long Range version, and £55,890 for the Performance variant. While this is a significant amount for a family car, it offers good value compared to other fast electric cars.
The Tesla Model 3 includes a lot for your money. Besides the suspension and chassis upgrades, it comes with 20-inch forged alloy wheels, sports seats, design enhancements, and unique software optimised for track driving.
Additionally, Tesla provides a 4-year/80,000km warranty on the vehicle and an 8-year/192,000km warranty on the battery and drive unit, offering extra peace of mind on the road.
Conclusion
With a sleek new design, impressive driving range, competitive price tag, and a driving experience that’s hard to match, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance is a top choice for those looking to make the switch. Although the removal of column stalks and the heavy reliance on the touchscreen may not appeal to everyone, those who adjust to its distinctive interior will discover a highly capable and talented EV.
