Video Review
Polestar continues its mission to redefine the landscape of stylish and sustainable electric vehicles with the introduction of the Polestar 3. Representing a pivotal evolution for the brand, this fully electric SUV marks Polestar’s first foray into this segment, positioning itself in direct competition with the likes of BMW’s iX and Jaguar’s I-Pace. Embodying a sporty essence, the Polestar 3 is envisioned by the brand as the epitome of a luxury SUV for the electric age.
Performance
Buyers can choose from two models at launch: the standard and the Performance variant. Both models feature a dual-motor setup with a torque split favouring the rear, enhancing the driving dynamics. The standard model generates 489bhp and 840 Nm of torque, while the Performance Pack model boasts an impressive 517bhp and 910 Nm of torque. Accelerating from 0-100km/h in 5.0 seconds, the standard version is slightly outpaced by the Performance Pack variant, which trims 0.3 seconds off that time.
The Performance variant pledges a more responsive handling, positioned 13mm lower than the standard model and equipped with a compact, rigid suspension setup. Regardless of your preference, the brand assures an enjoyable driving experience. Chief Engineer Joakim Rydholm emphasises that 'the 3 will breathe and flow a bit more than the Polestar 2'.
Range and Charging
It boasts a 111-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with 107-kWh being usable, providing a WLTP range of up to 610km in the Long Range Variant. Charging the battery to 80% should take approximately 20 minutes. Recognising the diverse charging infrastructure, Polestar has introduced a multi-high-speed charging system, allowing seamless transitions between 800-volt and 400-volt outputs. The Polestar 3 is also geared for bidirectional charging, laying the groundwork for future capabilities like vehicle-to-grid and plug-and-charge functionalities.
Design and Interior
This Polestar model introduces a distinctive design departure while retaining certain iconic elements, such as the Y-shaped 'Thor's Hammer' LED headlights, the full-width rear light bar, and robust side cladding. The vehicle showcases a sleek silhouette accentuated by a panoramic glass roof panel that gracefully curves towards the rear, passing beneath a prominent rear spoiler. Notable aerodynamic features include air-channelling vents at the bonnet's leading edge, substantial rear haunches, and flush-fitting door handles for a polished finish.
Inside, you’ll find a Scandinavian style featuring a blend of integrated technology and mindful materials. The Performance Pack introduces distinctive gold seatbelts and a laser-etched 'light line'. Beyond these additions, the cabin embodies a beautifully minimalistic design, prominently featuring a generously sized portrait-oriented touchscreen at the centre of the dashboard for most functions. This impressive 14.5-inch display runs on the Android Automotive OS, seamlessly integrating Google and equipped with an integrated e-SIM. Positioned just ahead of the sleek steering wheel, a separate nine-inch widescreen display houses the digital instrumentation. The steering wheel itself is adorned with prominent buttons, facilitating the activation of various driver-assistance features.
Cost Considerations
Pricing starts at €99,900 for the Long Range model, and an extra €7,000 required for the Performance model. Although the Performance model sounds enticing, the standard Dual Motor model, boasting 489hp, proves ample for most drivers. Not only does it offer an extended range compared to the Performance model, but it also comes equipped with a comprehensive list of standout features as standard.
Conclusion
The Polestar 3 is nearing the final stages of development, with the hardware finalised and the software undergoing tuning in anticipation of its mid-2024 launch. As the brand’s inaugural electric SUV, it stakes its claim in the higher end of the segment, embodying a seamless fusion of performance and sustainability. While its pricing may surpass other high-quality EV’s on the market, the Polestar 3 signifies a significant leap in the realm of electric SUV’s.
