Peugeot E-308 - Review

The Peugeot E-308 is the final piece in the 308 puzzle. With petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions already available, this is the first Peugeot to be offered with ICE, PHEV and fully electric powertrains in the same model. The much-anticipated fully electric version of the new E-308 is set to hit the roads in early 2024.

Performance

A brand new fully electric motor will be launched on the new Peugeot E-308 and E-308 SW: with 115 kW (156 bhp) and 260 Nm of torque for immediate responsiveness. Completing the sprint from 0-100km/h with a time of 9.8 seconds, making it slightly slower than many of its rivals, but quick enough to get up to motorway speeds with little fuss.

The new motor will drive the E-308 silently, without vibration and without CO2 emissions. It serves as a valuable addition to the existing range, which features 180 bhp/132 kW and 225 bhp/162 kW plug-in hybrids, along with internal combustion versions.

Range and Charging

Of course, if you're shopping for a small electric car, it’s not all about pace – electric range is a big consideration too. The E-308 and E-308 SW proudly showcase an official range of 413 kilometres, standing shoulder to shoulder in competition with the entry-level versions of the CUPRA Born and the VW ID 3.

The onboard three-phase charger, with a robust 11-kW rating, guarantees swift and efficient charging. When hooked up to a 100-kW public charging point, the vehicle can get from 20% to 80% in under 25 minutes, achieving an impressive 100 km in just 12 minutes.

Design and Interior

Peugeot has kept things understated with the E-308, and it's a smart move because the car still looks fantastic. While some smaller badges are scattered around, it’s great if you don’t want an EV which shouts about being electric, but less ideal if you like a quirkier-looking model that stands out.

The interior is arguably the highlight of the E-308: it’s much fancier than you’ll remember from Peugeots of old and sits ahead of comparable electric rivals. You can tell Peugeot is clearly on a mission to elevate its status with a noticeable leap in cabin quality.

The E-308 takes the same i-cockpit setup – which combines a small steering wheel with a digital dashboard – that might feel unfamiliar at first. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll find dials that are clear and easy to read, it just takes a bit of adjustment to make sure the wheel isn’t blocking them. The interior also comes equipped with a 10.0-inch infotainment system with fully configurable virtual i-toggle buttons, and connectivity including the latest i-Connect Advanced technology, an infotainment system that makes the driving experience more intuitive and rewarding.

Cost Considerations

While Irish pricing is still awaiting confirmation, if we take cues from the prices of the plug-in hybrid models, the Peugeot E-308 and E-308 SW are expected to be positioned on the higher end in comparison to their competitors.

In the standard entry-level Allure, you'll find 18-inch alloys, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. However, features like adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, and start are reserved for the range-topping GT. While the GT models come at a more premium price point, they bring additional enhancements like full matrix LED headlights, 3D LED taillights, a GT-specific grille, and wider sills, contributing a more aggressive aesthetic to the overall look.

Conclusion

So, is the Peugeot E-308 a good car? The E-308 effortlessly slides into the role usually reserved for traditional petrol or diesel cars. With its ample range, a well-crafted interior, and a comfortable driving experience, it smoothly transitions into the world of electric vehicles. Plus, its sleek exterior adds a touch of style, making it an all-around appealing package.
