Video Review
This week, we took the updated Tesla Model Y out for an exclusive first drive on Irish roads. At this stage, the Model Y needs little introduction. It’s been a chart-topping global EV for years, often leading the sales race thanks to its practicality, tech, and long range—despite some bumps in PR along the way.
Now, Tesla has given it a subtle mid-cycle refresh, fine-tuning the exterior, improving ride comfort, and adding a few smart tech upgrades. So, what’s new, and more importantly—how does it drive?
Performance
From the driver’s seat, the Model Y continues to impress. We tested the Long Range All-Wheel Drive, which adds a second motor for extra grip and delivers that signature Tesla punch. With 0–100 km/h arriving in just 4.8 seconds, it’s more than quick enough for everyday driving—and then some.
The Launch Series offers even more bite, cutting the sprint to 4.3 seconds. That said, the performance bump does trim the official range slightly, down to 568km from the Long Range’s 586km, but the difference is minor considering the added thrill.
Acceleration is instant and seamless, with confident traction from the dual-motor setup. Whether overtaking or merging onto a motorway, the Model Y always feels ready and responsive. And thanks to its improved chassis and suspension tweaks, handling feels more composed than before—particularly in corners where previous versions sometimes felt top-heavy.
Range and Charging
Aerodynamic updates help the 2025 Model Y squeeze out a bit more range—up to 586km WLTP in the Long Range variant. That’s an extra 30km over the previous model.
Charging is still a major strong point. The Model Y supports 250kW rapid charging, meaning a 10–80% top-up takes under 30 minutes. It’s still one of the fastest-charging EVs in this class, and with access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, long-distance travel remains straightforward and cost-effective.
Design and Interior
The updated Model Y doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does look sharper. Influenced by the Cybertruck and Cybercab design language, it now features a sleeker front end with a full-width LED light bar and a continuous rear LED strip that brings a more premium vibe. New 20-inch alloys, improved aerodynamics, and stiffer chassis tuning make for a better drive and a more athletic stance. It’s a noticeable refresh, even if not a dramatic one.
Inside, the familiar minimalist layout returns, but with some thoughtful refinements. Heated and ventilated front seats, improved cushioning in the back, and acoustic glass all contribute to a more comfortable, quieter ride. Rear passengers now get an 8-inch touchscreen for climate control and entertainment, while connectivity gets a boost with faster internet, upgraded USB-C ports, and improved phone pairing.
Practicality hasn’t been forgotten either—electrically folding rear seats, a powered tailgate, and generous cargo space (up to 2,138 litres, including the frunk) make this SUV as functional as ever.
Cost Considerations
Pricing for the updated Tesla Model Y starts at €44,990 for the Rear-Wheel Drive version, rising to €49,990 for the Long Range RWD and €52,990 for the Long Range AWD. At the top of the range sits the new Launch Series, priced at €60,990, which brings added performance and features. Irish buyers can currently only order the Dual-Motor Long Range variant, which has seen a notable price increase from its previous €51,990 tag. While Tesla’s pricing has always been subject to change, this latest hike places the Model Y in direct competition with premium rivals like the BMW iX3 and Mercedes EQB, making value and performance even more critical in buyers’ decision-making.
Verdict
The refreshed 2025 Model Y doesn’t radically change the formula—but it didn’t need to. Tesla has taken a successful, best-selling EV and made it a little better across the board. The new look is welcome, the interior more comfortable, and the driving dynamics feel tighter and more polished.
Yes, the price jump may push some toward competitors, but if you're already sold on Tesla’s tech, efficiency, and Supercharger convenience, the Model Y remains one of the most compelling all-rounders in the electric SUV market.
