Video Review
New brands and models are constantly emerging in Ireland, with a host of tech-focused manufacturers striving to redefine our relationship with automobiles. One that’s set to make its arrival in the future is Fisker, originating from California, distinguishes itself with its captivating design, innovative features, and impressive driving range, poised to make waves in the electric car market.
Performance
Despite its heavy weight, the Fisker Ocean offers a surprisingly enjoyable driving experience. The entry-level model in the Ocean lineup is the Sport, equipped with a single electric motor that powers the front wheels. Boasting 275 horsepower, it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. On the other hand, the Ultra, Force E, and Extreme models feature electric motors on each axle, providing all-wheel drive capability. The fastest variant is projected to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, with a maximum output of 564 horsepower. Additionally, drivers can select between Earth, Fun, and Hyper drive modes, with the latter unleashing the full potential of this 2.4-tonne SUV, making it incredibly quick in the right conditions.
Range and Charging
The Ocean offers various battery sizes, with the largest 106-kWh pack providing an impressive, estimated range of 707km. It is also compatible with the majority of EV charging stations. Utilising a 400-volt architecture, the Ocean supports DC-fast charging rates of up to 200 kW. When connected to a DC-fast charger capable of meeting this demand, charging from 10 to 80 percent battery can be completed in about 35 minutes. When using the more typical 7kW home charging point, expect this to take about 15 hours to get from zero to full charge.
Design and Interior
It looks like little else on the road, making it an attractive choice for SUV enthusiasts, and with the unique Red Planet colour option available for Extreme models, it is completely distinctive.
The Ocean's rotating infotainment display is logically laid out, featuring a minimalist layout without sacrificing functionality. Similar to Tesla vehicles, the centrepiece of the Ocean's interior is a large touchscreen. However, unlike Tesla models, the 17.1-inch display can rotate between portrait and landscape orientations to adapt to different driving conditions. While the base model features a fixed vertical screen, it still comes equipped with a standard Harman/Kardon stereo. Additionally, all models except the Sport variant boast the innovative rotating touchscreen and a more advanced audio system.
Inside, there's ample space for five occupants, including comfortable seating on the rear bench. In the Ocean One trim, folding down the middle seat back reveals an armrest with a touchscreen control panel, known as 'Limo Mode', by Fisker. This feature allows rear-seat passengers to adjust cabin temperature and media volume, while another control enables electric reclining of the rear seat, further enhancing passenger comfort.
Cost Considerations
Although the Irish pricing for the Fisker Ocean is yet to be unveiled, we expect it to come in at a competitive and affordable price point. We expect the mid-range Ultra trim to offer the best value, thanks to its all-wheel-drive powertrain and enhanced standard features. Opting for this model not only extends the range from 402 to 547 km but also includes desirable additions like a power-operated panoramic sunroof, the "Hyper" drive mode, and the highly praised California Mode, which lowers the side and rear windows and opens the sunroof with a single button press.
Conclusion
Considering its aesthetics and impressive straight-line performance, the Fisker Ocean holds promising potential in the market, especially if it maintains competitive pricing compared to other regions. Looking beyond the Ocean, Fisker has ambitious plans, with the budget-friendly Pear electric hatchback slated for release in 2024, followed by the Ronin electric sports car and the Alaska electric pick-up truck scheduled for 2025. These forthcoming models underscore Fisker's commitment to establishing itself as a significant player in the global automotive market.
